The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the

SILVER STAR MEDAL to

     LANCE CORPORAL PETER RICHARD CARROLL

             UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

For service as set forth in the following

    CITATION

               “The President of the United States takes pride, in presenting, the Silver, Star Medal, (Posthumously) to Peter R. Carroll, (2375967) Lance Corporal, U.S., Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity, in action, while serving, as a Fire, Team Leader, with Company H, Second, Battalion, First, Marines, FIRST, Marine Division, in connection with operations, against the enemy, in the Republic, of Vietnam. On 15, January 1969, Lance Corporal, Carroll, was standing watch, during a cordon, operation, around the village of Cam Sa, in Quang Nam, Province, when he alertly, observed, eight, North, Vietnamese, Army soldiers crawl, through a hedgerow, near the village. With complete disregard, for his own, safety, he opened fire, on the hostile, group and although he came under, a heavy volume, of return fire resolutely maintained, his dangerously, exposed position, thereby enabling, his men, to deploy, to covered, fighting positions. During, the ensuing engagement, with the numerically, superior force, the fire team's, machine gun, malfunctioned and realizing, the seriousness of the situation, Lance Corporal, Carroll, again standing in full view, of the enemy and delivering, cover fire, killed two, hostile soldiers and pinned down the others, while his companions, corrected, the deficiency. While thus protecting, his fellow Marines, he was, mortally wounded. His heroic and timely actions, inspired all who, observed him and subsequently enabled his comrades, to repel, the attack, of the North, Vietnamese soldiers. By his courage, bold initiative and unwavering devotion, to duty, Lance Corporal, Carroll saved, several Marines from possible death, or serious injury and upheld the highest traditions, of the Marine Corps and of the United States, Naval Service.
