                    UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

For service as set forth in the following

    CITATION:

"For meritorious service while serving in various capacities with Company F, Second Battalion, First Marines, First Marine Division in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam from 16 March 1969 to 16 January 1970. Throughout this period, Sergeant Rushing performed his duties in an exemplary and highly professional manner. Serving consecutively as a Rifleman, Fire Team Leader, Squad Leader, and Platoon Guide, he participated in several major combat operations, including Operations Pipestone Canyon and Durham Peak, and repeatedly distinguished himself by his courage and composure under fire. Particularly noteworthy were his actions on 16 July 1969, during a cordon and search operation, when his squad was tasked with responsibility for guarding an area near a suspected enemy bunker complex. Although the enemy made several attempts during the night to break through the cordon, Sergeant Rushing, constantly alert, thwarted every attempt. A search of the area on the following morning resulted in the capture of two enemy soldiers, a rice cache, two rifles, and 200 rounds of ammunition. Reassigned as Platoon Sergeant on 5 November 1969, he continued to distinguish himself by his outstanding performance of duty. As a result of his diligent and resourceful efforts, the operational effectiveness of his unit was greatly enhanced. By his diligence, superb professionalism, and loyal devotion to duty. Sergeant Rushing earned the respect of all who served with him and upheld the finest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service."
The Combat Distinguishing Device is authorized.
