FOR THE SECRETARY OF THE NAVY
V.H. KRULAK
LIEUTENANT GENERAL, U.S. MARINE CORPS
COMMANDING
"For meritorious service while serving as a Squad Leader and Platoon Guide with Company F, Second Battalion, First Marines, First Marine Division from 23 May 1966 to 24 March 1967, in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. During this period, Sergeant DI GIACOMO consistently performed his duties with exceptional professionalism, presence of mind and resourcefulness. On several occasions, he was assigned the duties of Platoon Sergeant, a job normally held by a Marine of higher rank and led his men with outstanding tactical ability. While participating in every combat mission assigned to his company, he demonstrated exceptional courage and inspiring leadership. During several operations, when it was necessary to request medical evacuation helicopters, Sergeant DI GIACOMO disregarded his own safety and skillfully directed the aircraft into the landing zones and supervised the embarkation of the wounded. Throughout his tour, his bold initiative, outstanding leadership and resolute determination were instrumental in the successful accomplishment of his unit's mission and earned him the respect and admiration of all who observed him. By his military skill, perseverance under the most adverse conditions and loyal devotion to duty throughout, Sergeant DI GIACOMO upheld the finest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service."
