In the name of the President of the United States, the Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific takes pleasure in presenting the BRONZE STAR MEDAL to
SERGEANT GREGORY SCOTT DIXON
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS
For service as set forth in the following
CITATION
“For heroic achievement in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces while serving as a Platoon Sergeant with Company E, Second Battalion, First Marines in the vicinity of DaNang, Republic of Vietnam on 29 August 1966. Moving with the right flank squad of his platoon, Sergeant DIXON was on a reconnaissance patrol which was sweeping a hamlet known to be an enemy stronghold. As the point and right flank squads broke out of the hamlet, they were subjected to sudden and intense close range machine gun fire from a tree line across a narrow river. The two squads immediately took cover due to the preponderance of enemy fire, but Sergeant DIX0N, unhesitatingly, and with complete disregard for his own safety, stood in the face of the fire and fearlessly moved among the Marines in the flank squad in order to adjust their positions. He then raced across fifty meters of open terrain under fire to the point squad and courageously assisted the Marines in organizing their positions. This done, Sergeant DIXON then returned to the flank squad and directed its fire against the enemy in order that the point element could extract its casualties. Later, he moved on to another position and directed the evacuation of the wounded men while still under fire. Largely due to his exceptional professionalism, the platoon suffered only light casualties and was able to accomplish its assigned mission. Sergeant DIXON's courage, exemplary leadership and inspiring devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.".
Sergeant DIXON is authorized to wear the Combat "V".
