The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the
BRONZE STAR MEDAL to
CORPORAL FRED RAYMOND KELLOGG
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS
For service as set forth in the following
CITATION
“For heroic achievement in connection with operations
against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam while serving as a Tank Commander with Company B, Third Tank Battalion, Third Marine Division. On the morning of 19 May 1968, Corporal KELLOGG's tank was providing support for a friendly unit conducting a road clearing operation south of the Khe Sanh Combat Base when the Marines suddenly came under a heavy volume of small arms, automatic weapons and antitank rocket fire from a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force and sustained numerious casualties. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, he unhesitatingly moved his vehicle forward and began delivering accurate machine gun and cannon fire against the enemy. Alertly observing several hostile soldiers in a tree line, he immediatley took them under fire, accounting for two North Vietnamese soldiers confirmed killed. Continuing his determined efforts, he skillfully maneuvered his tank close to several hostile positions and, fearlessly exposing himself to the intense enemy fire, threw hand granades into the enemy emplacements. Disregarding his own safety, Corporal KELLOGG resolutely continued to direct accurate suppressive fire against the enemy force, until he was seriously wounded when his tank sustained a direct hit from a hostile antitank rocket. His heroic actions and bold leadership inspired all who observed him and contributed immeasurably to the accomplishment of his unit's mission. Corporal KELLOGG's courage, aggressive fighting spirit and steadfast devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.”
Corporal KELLOGG is authorized to wear the Combat “V”
